In Conversation With Wissam Boustany

Wissam Boustany with flute

Wissam will share his extensive insight and experience on all things flute - and there’ll be a chance to ask your questions, with an audience Q&A at the end. Submit questions in advance via our form here to ensure they're answered!

About Wissam Boustany

Born in Lebanon, Wissam Boustany began his musical studies in Beirut with his stepfather. He moved to Britain in 1977, where he studied at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music. During these years Wissam received numerous awards, notably the Silver Medal in the 1982 Madeira International Flute Competition and (in the same year) the woodwind prize in the Royal Overseas League Competition. Wissam has worked with orchestras including the BBC SSO, BBC Philharmonic, LSCO, State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Utrecht Chamber Orchestra, Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and Palestine National Orchestra. In 1995, he founded Towards Humanity, a multi-decade international initiative working with musicians and charities, helping communities who suffer from the tragedies of war. In 1997 he was awarded a knighthood by the Lebanese government (Chevalier de l’Ordre du Cèdre) in recognition of his music and peace work.

Performances from Competitions Winners

We're thrilled to have performances from previous Competitions winners Nikka Gershman and Aalia Hanif. Nikka won our Young Performer category in 2022 with her stunning performance of Am Waldesbach by Paul Wetzger, while Aalia won the Diversity Prize in the same year for her beautiful rendition of 3 Songs for Flute and Piano (Movements 1 & 2) by William Grant Still. We can't wait to hear what they treat us to tomorrow!

Members are also invited to join us for our Annual General Meeting, which will include an update on BFS activities and member voting to elect Trustees to the BFS board of Trustees. It’s very important that you use your vote, as this ensures that the Board of Trustees reflects the priorities and needs of the membership.
