Read James Lowe's lecture on "psychoacoustics".

Psychoacoustics is the study of the relation between the way a physicist describes a sound wave and the way a musician describes the resulting sound.

BFS Website Concert Reviews: The small print

This venture by the BFS, concert reviews on the website, exists to fill a gap in flute —The Journal of the BFS, where we have chosen to concentrate on CD reviews rather than live concerts. Why? Because we don’t have unlimited space in the magazine, and because reviews sometimes can’t be published until five or six months after the concert, by which time the concert is history. A CD, on the other hand, continues to be available, so a CD review is always useful—you can go out and buy the CD at any time. On this website, however, we have unlimited space, and we can publish a concert review immediately.

Similar rules apply for website reviews as for printed reviews:

(1) Reviews are published for the benefit of readers, not simply to provide artists with publicity.
(2) We cannot necessarily guarantee to publish a review of every item sent to us or of every concert to which we are invited.
(3) The editorial team chooses reviews for flute. The concert reviews editor chooses concert reviewers from amongst BFS members. Requests to publish unsolicited reviews cannot be accepted.
(4) A concert reviewer has the liberty to praise or criticise the performance as well as items on the programme. A favourable review cannot be guaranteed.
(5) The reviews editor welcomes requests for concert reviews, which should be made to him at the address shown below. You should be a BFS member when you apply for a concert review. If you are not a member please click here to apply for a One-year BFS Membership before submitting your application.

If you would like your concert reviewed, please let the Website Reviews Editor know well in advance. We must be invited to review a concert.
