Announcing the Atarah’s Legacy Fund Memorial Prize winner 2023

Atarah’s Legacy Fund Memorial Prize

We’re thrilled to announce that Lucy Barrett is the winner of the inaugural Atarah’s Legacy Fund Memorial Prize. As well as impressing the judges with her playing, the Legacy Fund advisory group and the BFS Council felt Lucy provided a very compelling reason for wanting to be considered for the Prize, and felt that it would have given Atarah great pleasure in supporting her future development.

Atarah’s Legacy Fund Memorial Prize is an award of up to £500 to support the musical education of a promising player from any category of the Competitions - in Lucy’s case, the Young Performer category, where she was also Highly Commended.

Atarah’s Legacy Fund was introduced in accordance with the wishes of Atarah Ben-Tovim MBE, our past Chair and a legend in the flute community. It was established shortly before her death to support the musical education of a Competitions entrant of merit, musical integrity and potential. All entrants could put themselves forward, and the winner was chosen by the Council and from names offered by the adjudication panel in each category, prioritising a core musicality sensitive to and observant of stylistic differences.

Lucy Barrett commented, ‘This prize really means so much! I’m so grateful for the panel for choosing me and for Atarah for this opportunity.’

Thank you to everyone who donated to Atarah’s Legacy Fund to make this prize possible.
