Join us in Maidenhead for a packed day of classes, workshops, discussions, flute choir...and FUN!

The next in our series of regional Flute Days will be led by our very own President Wissam Boustany, an internationally renowned flautist, conductor and teacher who has developed a unique approach to teaching, performing and life known as the Method Called Love. He’ll be joined by the brilliant Christina Brugger and Sandy Hay on flute and Charles Matthews on piano.

The day will include:

  • Embracing The Evolving Moment (warm-up session through improvisation)

  • Masterclasses (up to 4 performers)

  • A Method Called Love (workshop/discussion/experimentation on technique/sound/memory etc)

  • Flute choir (divided into two groups dependent on ability)

  • Short open discussion about what we have experienced during the day

  • Recital (also featuring 2 selected participants and flute choirs)

There will also be flutes, music and accessories on sale.

Suitable for players aged 16 and over, of Grade 5 standard and above.

Price: £40 for BFS members, £50 for non-members (booking form below)

Wissam Boustany

About Wissam Boustany

Wissam Boustany is an internationally renowned flautist, conductor and teacher. He is currently President of the British Flute Society, chairman of PalMusic UK, Patron of Musicians for Peace and Disarmament and Patron of the British Susuki Music Association. In 1995 Wissam founded Towards Humanity, using music as a catalyst to support humanitarian projects. In 1997 he was awarded a knighthood in Lebanon in recognition of his music and humanitarian work. In 1998 he received the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum. Wissam’s recent interest in conducting led to the launch the Pro Youth Philharmonia in 2018, a professional training orchestra for emerging musicians, which wound down during the pandemic. Wissam continues to inspire and engage countless music lovers through his ‘Inner Journeys’ rehearsal/performance concept, based on his teaching which has become known as his ‘Method Called Love’. Wissam plays on a Brannen Kingma-system flute, with a headjoint crafted by Marco Granados.

Christina Brugger


About Christina Brugger

Originally from Germany, Christina was principal flute in one of Germany’s top youth wind bands and member of a competitive flute quartet. In 2011 she was awarded a music scholarship at the University of Leicester whilst on her engineering course, which allowed her to study with June Scott (Philharmonia Orchestra) and Dana Morgan (Flute tutor at Nottingham and Sheffield University). She performed the Mozart and Chaminade flute concertos as a soloist with the Leicester University orchestra and was awarded the ATCL and LTCL diplomas from the Trinity College London. She continues to study with both Dana and June as well as various international tutors (Wissam Boustany, Roderick Seed, Geoff Warren). She has recently taken up Jazz on the flute and in 2023 won the the BFS Competitions in the Adult Amateur category. She enjoys performing at local recitals and events.

Sandy Hay

About Sandy Hay

BFS Council member Sandy grew up in Ayrshire on the West Coast of Scotland and started playing the flute aged 13. His undergraduate degree allowed him to specialise in community music and he studied the flute with Sheena Gordon, before completing postgraduate studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with Kevin Gowland. He has worked as a flute teacher for over 25 years, living and working in Birmingham. Having worked as a music service manager, conductor and teacher, he’s passionate about bringing people together to enjoy making music, especially in flute choirs.

About Charles Matthews

Charles Matthews studied at the Royal College of Music, London, and was an organ scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge. He has won numerous awards, including first and second prizes in international piano and organ competitions around Europe. He has recorded CDs, performed for productions by the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet, and recorded music used in various theatres in Spain. Schott Music publish a collection of his compositions for flute and piano. Charles is organist of St Catharine's Church in Gloucestershire and also performs as a member of the Spire organ and electronics project.  He works extensively with young people, acts as piano accompanist and organ tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and regularly works on music courses in the UK and internationally. He is Musical Director of the Campden Chorus and Patron of Shipston Music Society.

BFS Flute Days give you the chance to connect with like-minded people, enjoy listening to great flute players, and make music together. Each day will focus on ensemble and flute choir playing, technique and a masterclass, as well as a short concert to celebrate what we have achieved across the day, and will feature a guest artist with strong links to your particular area.
